One Last Word

I very rarely talk politics… but dear god, another 4 years with someone who has absolutely no military experience commanding the world’s largest military. I value the lives of each and every single one of our armed forces, and it pains me to see that their leadership flags under the guide of someone with little to no military background, experience, or understanding. The military is complex and vastly different from any other organization, and if someone is called the Commander and Chief, they should be qualified and understand how the military operates.

And on a shallower note… I don’t know if I can really deal with another 4 years of Michelle Obama’s sleeveless arms in the White House. Or claims that she dresses well. I mean really… who belts their sweaters?

However, I am a proud member of the American public and I was so pleased to see how many people participated in the democratic process. It is our right and it is heartening to see so many taking it seriously. So. Go America!

I bought these beautiful pomegranates today and spent about two hours peeling and slurping! I ended up with four quarts of pomegranate. I’m excited to dig in during the week!!

Mountain Monday Morning

This morning I packed up the pup and went for a hike with my mother. We did about a 1.5 hour hike in the woods and let  Boo run free. She loved it!!

It was nice to get out and enjoy the weather and soak up the beautiful scenery. Next time I’ll take my good camera to take some pictures, but I snapped some with my iPhone. It was about 44 degrees Fahrenheit and I wore my thermal Frank Shorter Insert Tights. Brooks sneakers as always, and a pair of Smartwool socks. I layered my top. I wore an UnderArmor Scoop neck I got from a race in Maryland under a thermal running top from Nike. And for the wind? I popped on my new AWESOME Burton hoodie I snagged at TJ Maxx of all places. I love it. This one is similar: Burton Lotus Pullover. I also recently snagged a cotton mix hoodie from Burton which I adore also.

It was chilly for the first 15 minutes, and then I chased my dog through the woods and I was plenty warm!! Here are some pictures!!

Sleepy Sunday

I went for a run today… just under 4 miles. Nothing impressive, but I am making a concentrated effort to get out of the house every day for a run. No matter the distance or speed since I’m still trying to ease into it.

Anyway, I realized today that it is day light savings… which also means that Thanksgiving is near!!!! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of all. It’s right near my birthday and it’s when family comes together to appreciate all the things they have. I am SO excited!! This is the first year that I’ve had time to plan ahead for the menu and show you how I put together our family’s Thanksgiving. I took over from my mom when I was in high school (??? I have to ask my mother when I started….) but it’s totally my thing. I love it.

So! Get pumped!!!!

Friday Favorites (Link Love)

Good Morning!!!

In honor of rekindling my love affair with running, I wanted to share my running favorites with you. I started running when I realized during lacrosse practice that NO ONE else was enjoying those long training runs like I was… in fact I realized I only liked lacrosse for the running! So I joined cross country.

Over the years of running, I’ve come up with things that I like in my running gear. I’ve posted links where I found similar things to what I like.

  1. Hat. Always. A deep one that comes down to my ears and has a brim to protect my eyes from the sun. I have a Nike golf hat that is my all time favorite.
  2. I normally run with my MP3 player. Sometimes I listen, sometimes I don’t. I have a Sony W Series Walkman. Mine is the first generation and much bigger than the current ones, which are sleek and come in a few different colors.
  3. Shirt? I have a variety of favorites so I won’t name them all. However, I look for things that have a comfortable and scooped neckline (don’t want to feel choked). I like things with slightly longer hems to cover my tush and prevent by belly shows if they ride up a bit. And I like my shirts to be cut loose. Those super slim shirts are not my favorite.
  4. Sports bra – I have a few of the Nike Pro-Fit ones and a few New Balance ones… but my general rules are thick fabric, thick banded around the bottom, and generous coverage. I tend to like sports bras that cover more. I’m a 34C and I like to have everything strapped down and secured. I don’t like bras with a lot of stretch because those chafe.
  5. Shoes – I am a diehard Brooks girl. I found them once in a clearance bin at Marshalls, and ever since I have been all over their shoes. The PureFlow ones are my favorite right now, but I also have been a faithful Adrenaline wearer for years now. Not sure about what shoes fit you? Brooks has this awesome shoe advisor.
  6. Pants – I wear spandex. I like my spandex to be fitted, tight, and thick material. I also like them to have a drawstring waistband for easy adjustments. For winter, as it is now, I like Saucony and Frank Shorter.
  7. Shorts – In the off case I do wear non-spandex shorts, I wear the Nike Tempos. Everyone has them. I think they run a little on the wonky-side of sizing, but they do the job and I can deal with the minor nuisances like the internal lining being HUGE.
  8. Watch – When I started training for my first marathon I had a lot of trouble keeping track of my mileage, so I bought the Nike+ GPS watch. Mine is the first generation one so it’s the standard black and green, but there are many more colors now and it’s supposed to be a bit slimmer.
  9. New – Vests. I recently purchased this Saucony Vest and I’m in love. It protects me from the wind, keeps my core warm, and provides extra storage. It also comes with a little light to help people see you in the dark. I’m contemplating order a few more colors.

These are some of the things that I love for running…What about you? Any running favorites? Share!!!

Round Two

I guess I was not prepared enough for the bar. NYS results came back, and I’m retaking it in February. I had a bit of a premonition when I took it. It was just so freaking hard. I think it works out for the best, because even if I passed, I knew I didn’t score high enough of the multi-state section to waive into D.C… so this time I’ll just score high enough to waive in to D.C. Works out 🙂

So… some pictures I took today of Hurricane Sandy’s damage.

Stormy Sandy

Hurricane Sandy hit my area on Sunday, by Monday night the wind wiped out the electricity and cell towers. As I kid I loved blackouts. I thought they were so cool. Mostly because I could walk around with a flashlight and pretend I was on a grand adventure. Active imagination you know??

I guess I never grew out of that because when the lights went out I was kind of excited. I mean really, how often do we get to experience the awe inspiring power of nature so up close and personal? It was thrilling. The wind was strong enough to take your breath away!!!

Point is. I hope everyone made it through this storm with only minor scratches. I think things like this remind us to be good people and to appreciate our luck and our lives… And maybe to remind is that material things are not so important.

Seven Dollar Sunday

This morning, I went on a whirlwind trip to Boston for just a couple hours. I left this morning at 6:45 and I was back home at 6:00pm.

I met up with my cousin Jenny and we went on some retail therapy before indulging in some mimosas and brunch. Anyway… Jenny and I both bought these awesome eyeshadow palettes and eyeshadow brushes at Sephora for $7 each from the sale bin. I love the sale bins!! Jenny also got a hot pink lipstick for $3… such a steal! I also raided the Lord and Taylor Hosiery section and scored some lacy Givenchy tights. I paid $5 for each. I thought I’d share!

This eyeshadow palette has an awesome mirror and it’s weighty, so it feels really nice when you use it. The quad is called “ballroom romance.” I tried to find it online, but it looks like this might be something that’s been discontinued. Might want to try stores to see if your Sephora has a sale bin with it! The pumpkin colors glides on shimmery gold, and I’m in love with this color for fall. The two browns are perfect for a smokey eye combo… and of course the light color is great for highlight. The shadows are highly pigmented and beautiful. There were two other kinds, one that was purple toned and other with some brights… I wish I had gotten both. I might have to brave the hurricane tomorrow to see if my local Sephora has the other two.

These are the tights! They retail between $16-$18 a pair, but I snagged them both for $10. The dotty one is called “Swiss Dot Lace Back Seam” and the garter-esque is called “Garter Net Tight.” I can’t wait to wear these this winter. Nothing like pretty and lacy tights to spice up otherwise boring outfits!

I know this is a departure from my normal “thought” related posts or food posts… but with the impending winter and with my persistant unemployed status, I’ve been getting stir crazy. My shopping habits have been a bit out of control… so I’m trying to channel my nervous energy into blogging, sharing things, and making things.

Back tomorrow with some more projects I’ve been working on.

Love;

Things to Smile About

My aunt is visiting with my her family dog… I love my family. They are just so out of left field. My aunt is sprawled out on the living room carpet singing nonsense to the my dog and her dog. And while I find the singing to be totally absurd and out of a circus, she’s managed to get both hyper little puppies sound asleep. It’s a picturesque moment.

Anyway. Here are some pictures from the last couple of days that have made me laugh and smile.
